In London!

Hello world!
This is my second day in London and I feel so amazing! It felt so good to get out and about on our own today. The girls on my flight got in to the London Centre at about 11am yesterday and I actually felt pretty good. I highly recommend taking melatonin to help you sleep on planes- I slept for almost 5 hours! So, I wasn’t very energetic, but I really felt pretty good. Very little jet lag. Yesterday I spent a couple hours unpacking and getting settled in and then the three professors took us on a walk around Kensington Gardens/ Hyde park just to get out and keep ourselves awake. We saw the Prince Albert Memorial at the South of Kensington Gardens. It is HUGE! Very regal looking and nothing like what we have in the US. But, then again, we don’t have any royals in the US.

We also saw the outside of Kensington Palace, where Queen Victoria grew up and where Princess Diana lived.
We didn’t get to stay out very long yesterday because it get dark so early and we weren’t at all familiar with the area yet. It starts getting dark about 4pm and is completely pitch black by 5. It didn’t even start getting light until 8am today. Crazy.
The Centre is tall, old, cramped, and beautiful. So, basically, it’s European. I lucked out and got put in the room with 8 girls instead of 14, much thanks to my writing an early-to-bed, early-to rise schedule on the room survey. Our room shares one bathroom with two showers and two sinks. It’s tiny and mornings are very interesting. Also, we’re only allowed to have food (including wrapped gum and candy) in the servery because of a rat problem. But, you know, that’s ok! I’m in London!
Today we had our Centre Orientation from 10 am to about noon. In the afternoon, I ran errands with a couple roommates- Shelbi and Michelle. We picked up internet cards (because the centre internet is terrible), tube passes, laundry detergent, a laundry bag, notebooks, and a few other odds and ends. It felt so good to be out on the streets of London! It was a beautiful day, too, if you dressed right. It was 40 degrees Fahrenheit and with a constant drizzle, but I had rainboots, a coat, gloves, a hat, and an umbrella so I was good to go. We also stopped at a little bakery where I bought Italian “grissini” for 60 pence. It was about 18 inches long and a cross between a breadstick, pretzel, and biscotti, with lots of herbs I didn’t recognize. Pretty good!
After we dropped our things at the Centre, Shelbi and I went over to the Serpentine Gallery, a small art exhibit in Kensington Gardens which he had to visit for our European Fine Arts Class. We then hurried back home to make it before dark. We are allowed to be out after dark, but you have to be in groups of three, rather than two in daylight, and it was easier to find our way back in daylight anyway.
Tomorrow we’ll be visiting the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, Saturday will be the changing of the Guard and “The Woman in Black” and then Sunday we’ll find out where we are each assigned to go to church! Can’t wait!

Wait... I can't pick who I want to live with?? Not in Michigan!

According to this Fox News article, if you are advertising for a roommate in Michigan, it is illegal to request that the roommate be a certain religion, sexual orientation, etc. The only request you can "legally" make is gender!
The woman in this article simply put up a private announcement on the Church bulletin, asking for a "Christian roommate." Now, fair housing officials have said that in addition to hundreds of dollars of fees, they would like to require the woman to go through "fair housing training." Basically, they want to indoctrinate her against her religious beliefs so she won't ever consider making such a terrible blunder again as asking to live with someone who shares her values. I mean, what a ridiculous idea.
So, does this mean I couldn't ask for a roommate who does their own dishes? Is this now considered a hate crime? I am really appalled at this intrusion of government into citizens' private lives. This legislation is unconstitutional and certainly infringes on freedom of religion. I hope and pray that this woman will find a Christian roommate and get out of this lawsuit with her faith intact!

NOW State Affiliate slurs Meg Whitman

Following is an article reporting that the California state affiliate president of NOW (National Organization for Women) agreed that Meg Whitman, candidate for California Governor, could be called a "political whore."

I would hope that a supposed representative of women would have enough respect for womanhood to have the good sense to refrain from using such an ugly slur towards any woman.

All women deserve respect, Ms. Bellasalma, not just those who support your feminist and liberal agenda. Women can be independent thinkers. We can have our own, separate, intelligent views. And we can disagree respectfully and move on to work for the good of ALL women.

Leadership Institute Experience

Time to start blogging again!

I just got home from an intense two-day Youth Leadership School put on by the Leadership Institute in Orem. The Leadership Institute is an awesome non-profit organization which trains young conservative political leaders. Since LI was founded by the conservative legend Morton Blackwell in 1979, they have turned out conservative political leaders left and right. If you’re conservative and at all interested in a political career you NEED to check it out. I gained more practical knowledge about political activism in 2 days of LI than I have in 3 semesters as a political science student. I feel empowered and ready to go! Anybody need a campaign manager?!? Just kidding.

Though not a political campaign, I’m hoping to apply the principles I’ve learned to a local advocacy group I’m trying to start here in Provo. I would like to start a chapter of The Girl Effect. Pretty much the only problem holding me back right now is thinking of a good name for the group with one of my friends. Don’t worry, I will keep you posted and I’ll be a much better blogger from now on. Well, maybe.

One more announcement: I’m going to London! I’ve been accepted to the BYU Study Abroad at the BYU London Centre for next semester and I will definitely update my blog then for friends who want to hear about London. I’m hoping I get to go see parliament…

In summary:
The Leadership Institute is awesome,
Check out GirlEffect.org, and
Be excited for London!!!

Have a beautifully political day :)

Dean Hubbard video

Call me a nerd, but this video makes me laugh so hard. I wish I had seen it when it came out... This is Dr. Glenn Hubbard, who was on the short list to be chairman of the federal reserve when Alan Greenspan retired. Pres. Bush picked Ben Bernanke instead.
